Buckingham Palace wins best landmark over Stone Henge, Tower of London and St Paul's Cathedral

In our recent poll, we asked people what they think are the best landmarks in Britain. Buckingham Palace came out on top, and coming in second was Stonehenge and the Houses of Parliament, followed by the Tower of London.

  • Number one, with the highest percentage of votes (30%)said Buckingham Palace was one of Britain’s best landmarks
  • Coming in second at 27% was Stonehenge as well as Houses of Parliament, also 27%
  • The Tower of London came in third at 17%

    Coming in after the top three were some renowned British historical locations, including St Paul’s cathedral, the Lake District and Windsor Castle.

  • 15% chose the White Cliffs of Dover, and 15% also chose St Paul's Cathedral
  • Tower Bridge was the favourite landmark of 14%
  • 11% of respondents chose Edinburgh Castle
  • 10% fancy Windermere and the Lake District
  • Close behind is Westminster Abbey at 9%
  • 8% chose the London Eye or York Minster
  • Windsor Castle and Hadrian's Wall both won 7% of public vote
  • Remaining landmarks with lesser votes include the Angel of the North not far behind at 6%, while 1 in 20 people (5%) would visit Mount Snowdon or Forth Bridge. Blackpool Tower, the Iron Bridge Gorge, Nelson's Column and Ben Nevisall received 4%.

    Canterbury Cathedral, Clifton Suspension Bridge, Kings College Cambridge and Wembley Stadium all received 3%, while 2% said the O2 Arena, Glastonbury Tor, or the Cerne Abbas Giant. Only 1% chose attractions such as the Osmington White Horse, Llangollen Bridge, Tyne Bridge, and Arthurs Seat

    London attractions

    Many of the attractions deemed most popular by respondents were those based in our nation’s capital, with the top five made up almost entirely on London attractions, along with Stonehenge and the White Cliffs of Dover.

    Top tourism site VisitBritain recommends a large variety of popular sites spanning the whole British region. Buckingham Palace appears as number one on their top ten royal attractions, before Kensington Palace and Windsor Abbey. The Tower of London is also the number one recommendation as part of Britain's top ten world heritage sites, along with Stonehenge and the Canterbury Cathedral (numbers 3 and 4).
