Tate McRae has recently skyrocketed to fame as an up and coming pop singer. She gained her recent fame on TikTok after going viral on the app with her song “You Broke Me First.” Due to the song’s success, McRae’s single sat on the Rolling Stone‘s Songs Chart for 38 weeks.

A Video of Her Goes Viral on YouTube After So You Think You Can Dance

This singer broke the record for the longest-charting song released by a female artist on the Billboard Hot 100 with this single. Before ever attempting to become a singer, McRae was trained as a professional dancer. She attended Canada’s prestigious Alberta Ballet for 11 hours a day. In 2016 she auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance at eighteen years old. On the series she was immediately was praised for her skills. In her audition she performed a backwards walkover that made judge Paula Abdul state that she is “a gift from God.”

At the end of her season, McRae finished as third place overall. After the series she created a YouTube channel to share her love of dance and choreography. One week, she posted herself singing a song called “One Day,” instead of her normal dance content. The song went viral on YouTube, so McRae rebranded herself as a singer. In 2019 she signed to RCA records. A year later she released her debut EP All the Things I Never Said.

McRae’s Music Makes History

In 2020, her song “You Broke Me First” became an international hit because of TikTok. It’s been featured in over a million videos on the social media platform. Although McRae had other hits on the platform this was by far her most popular. This has over 1.3 billion streams across platforms worldwide and was the second most streamed song released by a female artist in 2020.

Her success didn’t stop there. She was the youngest musician to be featured on Forbes‘ 30 Under 30 List in 2021. McRae’s second EP Too Young to Be Sad was the most streamed female EP of 2021 on Spotify. The new year has begun with three large scale nominations for the up and coming artist. She has been nominated for three iHeartRadio music awards.

McRae has specifically received nominations for Best New Pop Artist, Dance Song of the Year for “You” featuring Troye Sivan, and Best Cover song for “Heather” by Conan Gray. McRae is nominated alongside Giveon, Måneskin, Olivia Rodrigo and The Kid LAROI for the honor of Best New Pop Artist in the upcoming awards. The iHeartRadio music awards are taking place on Tuesday, March 22 at The Shrine in Los Angeles, California.
